Our Calling

The door to God's plan for us was opened in 1982. One Sunday during contribution, we decided to follow Romans 12 and asked God 'what can we do besides put money in a plate to pay for someone else to do mission work?' So we decided to become that living sacrifice we had been reading about, and at first, we started working with new converts and visitors, and doing cottage studies in preparation for whatever was to come.

In 1985, when George was 48, he left Diana, who was crying in fear of a ferocious thunderstorm, and took off with 11 other short-term missionaries for Ghana West Africa to participate in a World Bible School follow-up campaign. Our equipment was Ivan Stewart's flip chart, highlighting baptism. The very first day, 6 young people gave their lives to the Lord!

As it worked out, my interpreter and I baptized a lot of people, I don't remember how many, and during that trip I learned who the Holy Spirit is, and how He works, and what He's doing for all of us. I asked the elders to send me back the next year so I could continue working with WBS in Ghana, but they said NO!

The Holy Spirit showed us that we didn't need outside support, and introduced us to Eric Dickey in 1987. We started working together in Malawi, Central Africa, still with WBS, in 1988, and returned together in 1989, and also traveled to Zimbabwe that year.

In 1990, God made it possible for Diana to join the group, and it was off to Malawi again. Things happened, and we did not step out in faith again until 1997, when George traveled to Malawi alone, still working with several local preachers he had met over the years and had developed close friendships.

Diana had become a Certified Optician, and at the last minute her office donated a dozen readers, which George took along. That dozen readers opened the door to the next phase of God's plan. George came home and said "This is what God wants us to do - we have a glasses ministry!"

In 1998, we collected donated glasses from the Lions Club, about 3000 pairs, and returned to Malawi to start eyeglass clinics.
